I just don't know what to put on these bottom shelves...

It has to be only things that cannot be broken or used as a weapon by any little hands. Perhaps they will work best as sleeping cubbies.

    We have some like those...they have lots of well-used board books on them.

    You could fold up some pretty blankets...and then it could be used as triple function (sleeping cubbies - linen shelves - and - a place for the eyes to gaze at some color)
